Indonesia, already boasting the world's largest expanse of mangrove forests, has set an ambitious goal to restore an additional 700,000 hectares of potential mangrove land by 2030. This announcement was made by Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq during a recent mangrove planting event in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.

"We currently have 3.4 million hectares of existing mangrove forests," said Minister Nurofiq, "and the potential for another 700,000 hectares. This is a significant target for our ministry."

To achieve this, the government plans to implement a strategic approach that involves planting mangroves from the coastline inland. This method is believed to increase the survival rate of the new mangrove plants.

Furthermore, the ministry is developing a detailed map of all mangrove areas in Indonesia. This map, expected to be completed by 2025, will serve as a blueprint for future management and conservation efforts.

The minister emphasized the importance of involving local communities in mangrove restoration projects. "We need to empower local communities to become active participants in mangrove conservation," he said.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of these efforts, the government is also working on new regulations to protect mangrove forests. These regulations will address issues such as illegal logging and land conversion.
